Our students are very lucky to have specials programs that include art, music, theater and our very own elementary science labs. Many of our classrooms have a seat or two that helps our students focus or sit comfortably, but our specials classrooms don't uniformly have these seating options.
Flexible seating options I'm applying for will help many of our students feel more comfortable physically, and when students are more comfortable physically, they're able to use that extra brain space for learning.
Many of our students have special learning needs, some with sensory sensitivities, some with physical therapy needs, some with untreated ADHD. We also have students who are living in domestic violence shelters or have recently been placed in foster care. Creating environments for creativity, curiosity and critical thought that seat our students comfortable for working and sharing with each other would help create an environment that was both physically and emotionally more welcoming and safe for all of our students.
