These supplies will allow me to further emphasize the science practice "Developing and Utilizing Models". The supplies can be re-used to construct multiple models and stop motion is particularly well suited to modeling biological processes. The students, both Science 8 and Pre-AP Biology, will be asked to consider the processes of mitosis and meiosis to replicate cells, produce gametes, consider the ramifications of mutation and describe how increases in biodiversity may result. Specifically, students will be asked to develop a model to illustrate how mutations on the chromosome can affect the proteins produced (MS=LS3-1 and HS-LS1-4) .
MS-LS3-1 Heredity: Inheritance and Variation of Traits
Develop and use a model to describe why structural changes to genes (mutations) located on chromosomes may affect proteins and may result in harmful, beneficial, or neutral effects to the structure and function of the organism.
HS-LS1-4 From Molecules to Organisms: Structures and Processes
Use a model to illustrate the role of cellular division (mitosis) and differentiation in producing and maintaining complex organisms.
