There is power in words. Stories give us relevance and understanding. The purchase of these specific mentor text is to help students understand the expectations of the NC Standard Course of Study. I have cross-referenced each of the materials and they all correlate with some aspect of the third grade standards.
Achievement gaps are lessened when students find relevance in stories. I plan to use mentor texts to introduce topics, address behavior, take advantage of beautiful illustrations and to take delight in vocabulary. In essence, these books will be the foundation for all learning. Students will be in charge of their understanding as they visualize events, make connections with the character, ask questions, make inferences, and then synthesize the information.
