Classroom lighting can play a significant role in the learning of students. Fluorescent lighting can cause students (and adults) to feel nervous and anxious, which can definitely have a negative impact on learning. Research has shown varying types of headaches linking to fluorescent lighting- some of which are triggered by the subliminal flickering. The harsh glare of the lighting can cause excessive strain on eyes- many people feel tired and their eyes are sore after being in a room with fluorescent lights for extended periods. Researchers also contend that classroom lighting can suppress hormone production, which has a negative impact on the ability to manage stress and disrupts sleep cycles (due to its effect on melatonin in the body).
These light filters tend to foster a calming atmosphere for learning and working and also reduce glare and flickering from fluorescent lights. Many students with unique learning needs are more sensitive to environmental distractions and benefit greatly from a calm and welcoming setting, which these light filters help to create. The light filters will be utilized in general education settings to help accommodate students in mainstream classrooms so that they can be more successful and thrive.
