These books will replace the traditional American History textbook, which tends to focus entirely too much on white men. I plan to use the Harkness Pedagogy in the teaching of this material, which emphasizes close reading and conversation.
Close reading and discussion leads to deep learning and builds the skill of making inferences. In my class, I strive to connect the past to the present and the future. These texts will help students to see how this country's past has created the society in which they live. It will also help them come up with concrete actions that they can take to make this world a better and more equitable place.
