As an eighth-grade United States history teacher, I am privileged to teach at a magnet school that integrates students from across the Austin area from all socio-economic, cultural, and ethnic backgrounds. Being the lead U.S. history educator for the comprehensive population, I have the opportunity to educate children from the neighborhood who encounter daily challenges. One of my greatest achievements is showing empathy for the demands my students face on a daily basis, such as: living in poverty, being a refugee or illegal immigrant, living in a home where drugs, alcohol, or abuse is prevalent, or the stress of meeting the high expectations of their family.
