We are requesting markers, headphones, bean bag seats, fidget toys and books to help my students practice social skills. Students with ASD struggle with expressive language and require modeling, visuals, and social narratives. When teaching various social skills to my students which include conversational starters, turn-taking, making friends, being part of a group, non-verbal communication (body language, facial expressions, etc.), self confidence, and figurative language using literature helps them to understand clearer. Not only do I support them with social and pragmatic skills, I also teach math and provide them with their modification and accommodations throughout the building. Due to the increase of online testing, read loud accommodation has now turned to the computer reading aloud. For my students to truly get the their needs met, materials such as headphones are essential. Not only are the headphones used for online testing but for online lessons and noise reduction for students who have auditory sensory needs. By having social language stories and sensory materials, my students will be able to make connections to lessons and everyday social scenarios while meeting their sensory needs.
