High school students don't get recess, but they still have excess energy they need to get out. Many students resort to excess trips to the pencil sharpener or garbage can to get this energy out, which can distract from learning. Therefore, an alternative option for energy release is not only necessary, but imperative.
To help my students focus on their learning while getting the kinetic feedback their bodies need, exercise bikes under their desks would help tremendously. Research supports this saying that exercise increases blood flow to the brain and also create "new neuronal connections" allowing the information that students are taking into more likely be retained and applied in new ways (Armstrong, Scientific American, December 26, 2018). Exercise also positively impacts mood, which will create a more motivating learning community for all students. My students will love pedaling their way to better concentration and comprehension in our classroom.
