I have been a special education teacher for the past 5 years at an elementary level. This past August I decided to take on a new opportunity and make a move to a nearby middle school and take a 7th grade math position. Since I have experience with special education students I have the 7th grade students with learning disabilities and attention deficit disorders split between my three standard math classes.
My seventh grade students are still learning different coping strategies for "getting their wiggles out". I try to allow time in class for movement breaks for my students that are diagnosed with ADHD. Having access to wiggle seats and flexible seating arraignments would benefit those students who have a difficult time maintaining their focus through a 50 minute math lesson. These students would have the ability to take their excess energy out by using their provided wiggle seats as a coping strategy.
