These materials will be used for a family night that focuses on the habit of mind perseverance. Students and their families will come to an after school event where they can complete these activities together, learning the importance of not giving up. Having a family STEM event allows students and family to build a love of learning while developing a positive relationship with families and the school.
Not only will these materials provide an experience that requires students to try different approaches, but the materials will also reinforce concepts in literacy, math, science, technology, in addition to requiring engineering skills.
The Famous Inventors activity kits bring STEM even further to incorporate non fiction literacy. Students will be able to learn about Famous Inventors as they brainstorm methods to design a telephone system with Alexander Graham Bell, make a working telegraph with Samuel Morse and build a motion-picture viewer with Thomas Edison. "Student Inventors" will need to test their designs and then adjust them based on the results. During our STEM night, our students will be able to solve these real world problems and talk about their findings with their families.
