When talking with my seventh-grade students about what they wish they had in the classroom library, they mentioned books that represented themselves. Whether that be through race, ethnicity, sexual orientation, assigned sex, social-economic status and more. Currently, the classroom library I have is lacking diversity and representation for all of my students. A classroom should be welcoming for all students and books are the perfect place to start. Just as important as it is for students to see themselves within the books they read, it is also important that these diverse books offer a 'window' into the experiences of all children. Lastly, I run into the challenge of only having 4-5 copies per book and I have 130+ students. It's important that the students are able to bring their books home with them so they can truly utilize their books.
