This year I am focusing on STEM through hands-on projects by using recyclable items, and, now that my students have been getting excited about coding, I thought it was time to add the challenge of two Wonder Workshop Dash coding robots.
My students are very much into science this year as half of my students are 5th graders, and they know and understand the importance of taking the 5th grade CA Science State test. I have more girls in class this year, and I have shared stories with them about famous scientists. Many have asked, "What about girl scientists?" This is something I want to change! I know several of the students in my class are very strong at math, and I am working on inspiring them to direct their futures into a science career. I am requesting a science kit to help with this.
Apart from concentrating this year on science, this is also my third time teaching a combination 4th/5th grade class, and I have learned that the challenge is keeping the other grade independently working but motivated as well. The Coding Robots will be a motivator in my class.
My request for flexible seating is also desperately needed in a combination class due to the need for students to feel free to move or fidget without being disruptive to others.
Lastly, adding books to my library is also something I am looking forward to as this is only my fourth year teaching, and I am building my library.
Thank you for considering my project, and I am looking forward to continuing to inspire my amazing students!
