Adapted seating is an innovative way to stimulate learning, creativity, and independence. After whole group instruction, students are encouraged to find a comfortable spot in the classroom to engage in their independent or partner work. Students love having the choice to find a place in our classroom to be productive. In the past, I have managed to scrape together buckets, stools and carpet squares to provide different seating arrangements. With my own money, I purchased scoop chairs and a small sofa. Equipped with a clipboard and a carpet square, for example, students have shown their ability and desire to write even after writing time ends. Independent reading takes on new meaning as students sit on the couch or in a wobble stool with their favorite book. Partners work collaboratively not only in deciding where to sit, but also working on group projects together. Providing bean bags and other types of seats, through this project, will add to the other diverse seating arrangements I currently provide. The new additions will surely be a hit for the upcoming school year. With your help, I will work towards educating young children who will begin to develop problem-solving, creativity and collaborative skills!
