With the rug and soft seating, a peaceful, self-reflecting corner will be created in the classroom. This area will allow children a brief "break" so they can calm themselves down and return to learning.
Children come to school with all kinds of things on their minds and we want to create a safe environment. This corner will also be used as a social emotional learning environment, where children will learn various techniques to use throughout life to calm themselves and to think before they act.
We serve so many students who have experienced trauma or who have a very chaotic home environment. These kids may act out at school in ways that appear to be "bad behavior" but many times, children have not learned the coping or expressive skills needed to deal with whatever the issue is. This corner will be designed to be a guided self-reflection area through various expressions such as art and writing or journaling. This will also enhance literacy skills, which is also a struggle in our area.
