Comfortable/flexible seating allows students to take charge of their learning and make choices that work best for them. During work time they choose a location in the classroom that best fits their mood. Currently I have a 12 foot pew, a two person boat cushioned with old pillows, an over-sized dirty white chair and 2 black worn rocker chairs. The locations are so popular that I have to assign the "special spots" a month at a time to prevent any arguments. I team teach with my third grade partner who started flexible seating last year thanks to Donors Choose. I have noticed how motivated they are to learn and are noticeably more engaged in her classroom. When her students come to my room they struggle with my limited choices.
The products that I have selected will help both groups of students by giving them additional seating options to promote motivation and active engagement.
The chair and pillow covers will provide comfort and ease of washing to cut down frequent outbreaks of head lice. Our high percentage of students with special needs can benefit from the calm and soothing light covers, alternative seating by utilizing the cushioned boat, pew, lap desks, rocking chairs and bean bag.
I have seen how choice can positively affect my partners students work and demeanor and hope to provide the same options.
