In sixth grade science, our standards have students learning about ecosystems. We teach food chains, food webs, and food pyramids. My students would benefit from dissecting owl pellets. Owls swallow their prey whole, and do not have a crop, therefor the food goes directly to the gizzard. Owls cannot digest the fur or bones so the gizzard compacts it into a tight pellet that the owl regurgitates, known as an owl pellet.
Students can learn first hand the diet of the owl by dissecting the pellet, recovering bones, and comparing the bones to a bone chart to identify the prey.
