This project will incorporate literacy skills as we read about the fictional experiences of a young girl who plots to help her family escape 1960s Berlin just after the Berlin Wall is erected.
Using facts to frame the narrative, students will be transported through Modern History to the Cold War era, by way of historical fiction. They'll learn about political ideologies that shaped our world and events that changed the course of history forever. Students who have only ever enjoyed the benefits of a democratic and just society will realize the brutality of other countries during a tumultuous time in history. They will compare and contrast political ideologies and will enrich the novel study with a close inspection of primary sources documenting the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989.
