We have a book shortage this year meaning only half of our 9th graders will be able to read the fantastic YA Novel "Absolutely True Diary of a Part Time Indian" by Sherman Alexie. Without the 80 books needed to cover this shortage, half of our students will read a variety of other works we have on hand, which will exclude them from the communal experience of discovering and enjoying a novel among a large, diverse cohort of their peers. We hope you'll help me make sure that all our 9th graders get the chance to read Alexie's powerful and accessible meditation on race, class and identity told through the eyes of 14 year-old Junior, a budding cartoonist growing up on a Spokane Indian reservation. We know our students will connect with the issues raised in this novel and I hope to give them all that shared opportunity.
