In the age of Google Translate, students have forgotten the benefit of a paper dictionary. It has become way too easy for them to type in a word and trust that what they have been given is correct. Bad translations are common and they range from funny, to embarrassing, to incomprehensible.
There are so many benefits to a physical dictionary. When students use an instant translator or even an online dictionary, they get the word they want instantly and in isolation. They don't have to work for it and are less likely to remember what they've learned.
They also never get the secondary benefit of learning a new word without intending to. In searching for the word they want, they are exposed to hundreds of words they weren't looking for. Very often, this teaches them new vocabulary that they didn't even realize they wanted.
