The pipes and elbow joints will be used to make a phonics phone for students in grades kindergarten through third grades. Students will read into these "phones" like they would talk into a real phone. I have used this intervention in the past, and students have become more successful readers. Students will use the phonics phones as they read with other students in learning centers, in small reading groups with their teachers, and at home when reading with parents.
As they read into the pipe phone, students should be able to hear themselves more clearly, monitor their reading, and make corrections as needed while reading. This is a tool that has been used to help struggling readers become proficient readers. When using the phonics phones, students have become more confident in their ability to read.
