As a teacher teaching World Language - Mandarin Chinese, many of my students have never got a chance to travel out of the state, let alone to a faraway nation located at the other side of the global village. Due to the fact that my school is a Title 1 school with more than half of the students are from low-income families, travelling during holidays or winter /spring /summer break would definitely a luxury in life.
To learn a world language well, students need to find a way to feel and experience the culture rooted into the language they are learning to master. I had been searching for various ways to make such things happen to these young learners for years, until I heard about and personally tried Google Cardboard - the Virtual Reality Viewer. To my great surprise and joy, these cardboard glasses are so capable of bringing images to students' life! They can instantly experience a cinema-like virtual reality world when they are guided to follow me to look at pictures on smartphones or watching geographical videos.
When I borrowed some of these Virtual Reality Viewers to show my class the images of Great Wall of China and the Forbidden City, my students are noticeably more engaged in their observation and less disruptive of their peers when they are given the tasks /assignment to handle at the end of the observation.
The products that I have selected will help my students effectively by giving them the precious opportunity to feel and experience the cultural insights that they would otherwise have little chance to feel and experience. I sincerely hope that, with your kind sponsorship, such basic new technology gadgets will make a big difference in my students' World language learning journey.
