Every week Spanish-speaking students come to the library asking for graphic novels and other high interest books to read. Unfortunately, our library does not have many books in Spanish. The titles we do have are checked out to other students and as soon as the books are checked in, they are immediately checked out again. The books are falling apart from overuse. We need more available books to choose from for our students.
40% of our students are Spanish-speaking and only 13% of our library collection is in Spanish. 33% of our collection is over 15 years old. We definitely need current, engaging, interesting books in Spanish. Our students deserve to have a library that reflects who they are.
Students who read for pleasure develop an intrinsic desire to engage with stories, characters, and learning. When students view reading as pleasurable, they aspire to read even more. Reading for pleasure leads to life-long learning. We want to encourage reading at our school!
