I am a teacher of 6 students ages 7-9 years of age with a diagnosis of autism. We are a self contained classroom in a specialized school. I have been working with some of these students since they were 5 years old and right out of preschool. When I first met most of them, they were unable to sit and attend for more than a few seconds. Most of them experienced great difficulty with communication skills. Some were non-verbal but most were minimally verbal. They demonstrated limited academic skills and had a great deal of difficulty transitioning through their daily activities and environment. Oh what a difference a day can make! Now my students are all on reading programs, are enthusiastic for group learning activities and are forming friendships as their communication skills improve.
