As my students walk into my classroom each week, their eyes naturally gravitate towards the big piano that is in the back of the room. Everyday they go over parts of their theory lessons, but, without the resources to put their knowledge to use, they are losing a critical part of their musical growth.
I teach at a Title I school, and many of my students cannot afford to take private lessons for instruments. This is why providing them with a piano lab and giving students an opportunity to practice and have more tangible evidence of their progress will be a beneficial boost to their self-esteem. Learning to play an instrument also stretches a student beyond just their musical skills. Playing the piano will help develop critical character qualities that will be necessary when they go on to higher education and eventually enter the workplace. With these ten keyboards and music stands, my students will have the ability to practice musical theory and learn disciplines essential to their development.
The best way to keep a student engaged is to give them the opportunity to use the skills they are learning! Providing this piano lab for my students would give them the chance to grow stronger musically and put their hard work to action.
