I teach two half-day pre-k classes. All together I have 48 students. We are always trying to maximize learning in the short time we have. Our students come from various backgrounds; but have one thing in common..poverty. There are a total of 7 languages spoken by students and their families in my classroom. Some students are refugees fleeing their countries and have just arrived in the United States. They come here without their personal items or even their own birth certificates..some with only the clothes on their backs. They face many hardships at such a young age of only 4. All of my students qualify for the free lunch program and the food served here may be the only thing they eat all day. I also have some students who live with foster parents. They have been taken away from their families for various reasons and have lots of baggage when they come to school. My students are very eager to learn at the age of 4!!
