My students have their noses in books everyday at school. School has become a place to explore genres, practice reading a new language, or simply enjoy a captivating title. Many of the books in classroom libraries are catered to students who are proficient English speakers. Students who are still learning English do not have access to these books. Some of the books in my projects such as "Dogman" and "Babysitter's Club" are meant to peak the interest of 3rd and 4th graders but also be accessible for all levels of English proficiency.
Additionally, the books students are reading often do not have characters that look like them, or face the same challenges they do. Through this project I hope to provide students with books the center around characters like "Frida Kahlo" and "Tito Puente" to inspire students to reach their fullest potential. The books I chose also have captivating illustrations like "Bones" and "This is Washington D.C." that can engage all learners whether they speak the language in the book or are still learning.
