An aquaponics system will demonstrate how all biotic and abiotic things contribute to the health of an aquatic ecosystem. 5th grade studies the cycling of matter and energy throughout a system. This project will demonstrate how reliant all living creatures are on each other, and how resources are to be used in a balanced and responsible way.
This project can make sophisticated concepts tangible to the struggling learner and enrich gifted learners as well.
It offers the opportunity to study all branches of science, to include Biology, Ecology, Chemistry, Physics, and Geology. This integrated approach emphasizes again a holistic view of our planet.
Sustaining life elicits empathy and responsibility. Students will understand that health can be described qualitatively with words, but ultimately the math of population growth, pH balance, and proper ratios of elements can refute or support their claims about success.
