My project focuses on promoting a love of literacy for students in my second grade classroom. The students from the class of 2032 have endured a lot of learning loss as a result of the ongoing pandemic, and because of this many of my own students are now behind in reading comprehension and literacy skills. At this age, students who are struggling readers become easily frustrated that reading doesn鈥檛 come as easily as they perceive it to be. The materials I have selected for my project would help me in my small group instructions during class time as well as assist in teaching the students who come to me after school for tutoring. I have selected items that would help engage the students and promote a love of literacy and learning.
My selection of games and materials focuses on items that work on both foundational literacy skills and reading comprehension. We have been fortunate enough to be able to provide 1:1 Chromebooks for all of the students in our district. We use these Chromebooks daily for a program we have implemented at our school to help mediate some gaps in both literacy and mathematics that provides oral instruction and cues for tasks. The problem we have encountered with this, however, is that not all of my students have headphones, which becomes bothersome for those trying to focus and listen. I have selected a class set of well-reviewed and hopefully durable headphones to help alleviate this.
