I work with students who struggle in many areas of their lives. One of the biggest struggles is getting students to externalize what they are feeling on the inside. Sometimes students may resort to hurting themselves or others to get out the pain they feel on the inside. As a Licensed Professional Counselor and Certified School Counselor, it is my goal to empower students to communicate in a healthy manner that is also positive.
Through this year-long project called Words Work Wonder For Me, students will learn to journal and to put on paper what they are feeling on the inside. It is my hope that through the use of journals and writing, they can learn a positive coping skill that they can utilize the rest of their lives.
I received my first journal as a sixth grader from a teacher, and that journal changed my life. I am Mexican American and from a large family, and I will always remember getting my first journal. It became the first of many over my life. I learned to write about my problems instead of hurting or fighting about my problems.
Words Work Wonders For Me has the potential to change my students' lives just as my first journal changed my life.
