The counting boxes and learning manipulatives allow my learners to access the curriculum; by engaging students meaningfully in abstract concepts such as 1:1 correspondence, the math manipulatives provide concrete examples of how to learn the meaning of quantities, numbers and other foundational math skills. "What we learn with pleasure, we never forget."- Alfred Mercier. This quote is a reminder for me to make every learning opportunity one that will stay with each student for years to come. Every week we build on the previously learned math skills. Having various math manipulatives and activities allows my staff and I to create fun and novel ways of teaching difficult math concepts by individualizing each learners experience. In our math centers, students will practice finding and counting quantities up to 20, sorting by colors, shapes and sizes and independently completing math tasks. When working with students with different abilities such as in my Autism specific classroom, it is important to keep in mind the different kinesthetic/ tactile learning styles in order to best meet the needs of each individual student. We are teaching students the concepts of quantities and numbers which will be the foundations that will lead them to be mathematicians!
