A calm down corner is an essential part of teaching students how to self-regulate while giving them a safe environment to learn and grow. When students are experiencing difficulties in the classroom, they often come to me to learn the skills they need to regulate themselves in the classroom. I envision the calm down corner as a way for these students to begin to learn the skills of how to calm down by themselves so that they can integrate those skills back into the classroom.
It is not expected that students will always know how to self-regulate, we must teach them those skills and the calm down corner provides an opportunity to do that. The calm down corner will have numerous sensory, breathing techniques, and other visual aids to help teach calming down strategies. It will also provide them a comfortable and safe place to practice these techniques. I have also included a curriculum for me to teach them the executive functioning skills they need in order to self-regulate. In addition, there is a wonderful app that teaches mindfulness strategies that I would love for the students to be able to use, but I need cases for the iPads. I have seen the benefits of providing a calm down corner for students and it is remarkable how teaching them to use it helps them generalize the skills into the classroom and their lives!
