To start out the year this year, our students expressed interest in designing their own classroom setup. Other classrooms in their primary schools as well as other classrooms in our building have amenities such as flexible seating and paint/decor that helps students to feel more engaged in their learning environment.
We know that engagement leads to student achievement and I truly believe that student voice in the classroom leads to engagement. This was just one way I worked to get students more engaged in their learning environment. Students are incredibly excited about the prospect of seeing their dream become a reality.
Each item listed on my page directly correlates with something that our winning classroom design includes. We are hoping to secure all of these items to set our room up with the flexible seating plan my students requested. They proposed many different places to sit throughout the room on a variety of surfaces in order to meet the needs of all students. Since we do a lot of group work, they also wanted the room to be conducive to a lot of movement.
-The couches will provide comfortable group work in a more informal setting. It also provides more seating in the classroom.
-The coffee table will provide a surface for students to place their books while working in groups.
-The bean bags, donut balls, reading pillows, and balance balls provide flexible and comfortable seating for independent work as well as group work.
