I am the school fifth special education teacher for 30 students. I service each of these students in both ELA and Mathematics. Each of my wonderful, kind, and inquisitive 10- and 11-year old students has a very different learning profile, however there is also a hefty list of commonalities among my students:
*All of my students are reading at least 2 grades below grade level.
*English is a second language for all of my students.
*None of my students have reasonable access to a library to view and borrow books.
*None of my students have access to an individualized digital reading program to help them make independent progress at home and at school.
*80% of my students do not have an English speaking parent at home to help them practice reading and writing in English.
The resources that I have requested will assist my children in learning to read and approach grade level mathematical content in ways that are fun, engaging, and most importantly foster INDEPENDENCE.
*An iPad and Osmo system will be a critical learning tool in both small group instruction and for individual students that need constructive 'brain breaks' in an inclusive classroom setting.
*2 CD players will help students practice reading along at home where other resources are not available.
*Online learning licensing provide my students with additional opportunities to learn - at their own pace in our school computer lab several days a week.
*Engaging brain break games will foster teamwork and a love for learning and thinking about learning during small group resource instruction.
