The 21 children in my class have often seen large wildlife in their own yards or on the streets of Anchorage but rarely have they seen domestic farm animals. Many children do not know where milk comes from. When asked about a picture of a cow, a student answered, "That moose was eating my tree!"
Follow the Child to the Farm is an organization designed to give the children hands-on experience in caring for domestic animals, as well as learning about and understanding the responsibility humans have toward animals. At our school, we strive to instill in the children a lifelong stewardship of the resources humans use. This will be the first, and for many, the only experience with a working farm. We will milk a cow, groom a sheep, ride a horse, sketch and write about the skeleton of a pig and explore the origins of our food. The key to this activity is seeing and touching the live animals. A picture isn't enough for young children to comprehend and retain information. For this age group, practicing skills with their own hands will be the experience they will remember!
