In American Literature, we read a variety of literature that explores aspects of the American Dream. The Color Purple by Alice Walker is a modern book that inspires conversations about love and hate, identity, and encourages my students to contemplate their roles in the world. Through independent reading, class activities, and class discussions, we read about the heroic survival of one woman and her identity, and we connect their journey along the road to the journeys of our own lives. Students wrap up their reading with explorations of self identity and brainstorm ways about what their identity means with the American Dream.
