The books I've selected will create a print-rich, updated library of titles that will be representative of my students' lives, experiences, and identities. Students have time to read for pleasure each class period, and an updated library stocked with high-interest, newer titles will ensure that they find books that both resonate with them and nurture their love of reading. Updated titles will also help engage and grow reluctant readers which will positively impact students' broader school experiences.
Expanding on an existing, outdated classroom library is a labor of love; I often visit yard sales and thrift stores to find titles that match my students' interests, identities, and abilities. Shelving our book bins with fresh titles and genres, such as graphic novels and picture books, means that my students will spend less time sifting through cracked covers and yellowed pages, instead perusing several titles of interest to them before settling on a new read. More importantly, the list of books I've selected are representative of my students; the impact of seeing oneself represented in a text cannot be overestimated.
My students look forward to reading for pleasure in the midst of a busy day; they are already learning to appreciate how precious and rare free reading time can be. An updated, diverse collection of books for our classroom library means that all students will find that just-right-book!
