In the first half of my first year of teaching, I noticed that in a special education classroom every student learns differently. Every student has a different need and is at a different level. In the beginning, teaching in traditional settings, whether it be on the floor or at their desk, students were not as engaged. Students did not look like they were engaged in learning or giving their best efforts. After winter break, I switched things up to where students were able to choose where they wanted to do independent work. And it was a complete 180 in engagement and effort. I didn't have many seating options for students to choose from so they laid on the floor a lot or they choose from 3 different seating options we had for the 11 - 14 students that I had in my classroom. With limited options, it did make a difference in academic performance and self-esteem. I hope to give them more options and the ability to have more flexibility in the next coming school year. By giving students the choice of flexible seating it gives them more of a chance to express their intelligence. This allows for students to take responsibility for their learning by making choices that are most beneficial for them.
