Our district has adopted a writing curriculum that emphasizes writing as a cyclical process. On an ongoing basis, there are opportunities for students to meet as a whole group at a designated meeting location, confer in small groups, work closely with the teacher on their writing goals, and have choice in not only what they are writing, but also where they are writing. Our classroom is in need of a nice area rug to make the room feel cozier, as well as offer a common meeting space during whole group instruction and check-in, and the stools will be flexible seating options for the meeting area or pulled up to a counter or standing desk to give options for where to work in the room. The easel will allow me a place in the meeting area to model writing and create anchor charts the students can reference during independent work. A tabletop easel will be used during small group work when I have 4-5 students working me with on a focused writing skill or other steps of the writing process with my guidance. Finally, the classroom caddies will be filled with a variety of writing tools, which can be used not only to make writing more fun, but also to color code parts of student work for feedback and revision.
In general, I am trying to provide a structure that makes writing feel manageable so students may develop confidence as writers. These materials will allow for movement and flexibility throughout the writing process, therefore empowering students to take ownership of their learning in an appropriate, comfortable classroom structure that better supports the writer's workshop model and promotes literacy skill development for a lifetime.
