Last year, I attended a continuing education course through Brainsprings, a Nationally Accredited Orton-Gillingham, Multisensory Literacy program, which I have been implementing in my reading tutorial sessions.
Since implementing this program, my students have shown great progress, even moving up more than one grade level in a year since using this system. The tutorial sessions require hands on-activities to provide a multi-sensory approach to reading. I like to provide a mixture of hand-made sensory items such as vowel sticks, pipe cleaner letters and sand trays to make tactile manipulatives and games like hangman, spot and swat and pop for blends to create a fun and stimulating learning environment. We will work on creating an interactive phonics notebook with primary journals, each group will have a set of red words (sight words) cards to use in class and a set to take home, which is what the photo boxes and the note cards and rings are for. The bright colors make it easier for students to read. I am so excited to offer students this amazing multi-sensory approach to learning, and I hope you will decide to fund this project so I can bring these wonderful items into my classroom.
