My students need lots of "hands on" experiences with number, being able to manipulate number in a variety of ways. I don't want them sitting, watching math happen, I want them actively engaged in creating number in the acquisition of number sense.
Rekenreks provide this experience for them. When they have these individual tools in their hands, they are the builders of number. It's concrete and engaging. I have been able to borrow a few to try them out and have discovered what a powerful tool they are for my students.
Number Sense is the basis for all of math mathematical thinking! We are the beginning of this journey of number and want to make math theirs to discover.
