My students will use The American Heritage Children's Dictionaries in specific reading and writing lessons on how to use the materials as well as students referring to them when they read and write.
My students want to improve their English to understand what they read, so they can learn about the topics they love to read about. Not knowing what some words and idioms mean hinders their understanding. Looking up word meanings and idioms in the dictionaries will increase their vocabulary, which will in turn improve their English.
The students will create pages that show what a specific idiom means.
On one side of the page they will draw the literal meaning. Then after they look up the meaning of the idiom, they will draw the figurative meaning. During the ESL period, we will use the reference materials to look at word meanings, part of speech, prefixes, suffixes and synonyms. We will enter this information in our student created 'Link Word Dictionaries'.
