The class set of books called Refugee by Allan Gratz will definitely give my students an insight into the refugee experience from the perspective of three middle school aged children fleeing their home countries for several different reasons. This is a topic that many of my students have very little knowledge about as they come from a rural background where they are not affected by the topic of refugees. Not only is this topic important to know about, but I also believe my students will be able to make more emotional connections to the characters in a book like this. My students have very little knowledge about the refugee expereince. We start talking about this topic in class. I have found that my students are very interested in this topic.
The book Refugee by Alan Gratz would help my students make more emotional connections with the characters who are fleeing their countries for various reasons. Not only can we spend time discussing the events from the book together in class, but this book also gives us many opportunities to research and learn even more about the refugee experience. This book has also been chosen as the Global Read Aloud novel for 2018. This means that my students will also be able to have discussions from all over the world centered around the characters’ experiences from different eras in history as well as other themes present in the novel.
Thank you for helping us become a part of one of 80 different countries to participate in the Global Read Aloud program and become more compassionate and connected readers for life!
