My seventh grade English students have set a goal to increase their vocabulary at least one grade level by the end of the school year. I am teaching the students to stop in their reading and studies to write down and look up words that they don't know as they come across them. I am striving to have a mini notebook for each student to carry with them to their classes so that they can stop and jot down words the moment they hear them.
We are also going to be doing a writer's workshop and the students are going to keep a writer's journal every day for thirty days. This is a proven strategy to use to increase retention, productiveness, and motivation in all aspects of work and school. The students will write every day at the beginning of the day for 15 minutes straight and will continue this practice for thirty days. We are really excited for this workshop and hope to have the materials to make it happen.
