The overwhelming majority of these 16 and 17 year olds hate to read... but only because they haven鈥檛 found the right story. "The Hate U Give" is a high interest fiction novel that is reflective of the social issues that they are passionate about. All it takes is one good book to hook a reluctant reader and transform him/her into a critical thinker. The book also fits right in to the first two units of the course 鈥淭o what degree does environment determine identity鈥 and 鈥淐ivil Rights.鈥 I read and reviewed the book over the summer. In it, issues like the perception of others, fitting in, code switching, judgment, death, love, family, and the adolescent experience are all presented through dialogue, setting, characterization, allusion, figurative language, tone, and theme. It is engaging and appealing in a way that encourages young readers to think.
