First graders love books! First grade is a very important year where they learn to read and continue to learn social skills. However, every year social emotional learning is an area they continue to struggle with. In order to progress academically, they need this support first, while also expanding their knowledge of diversity and accepting other's differences. By having social skills taught through children's literature they will be engaged in these very important life skills and will be motivated to read these books on their own.
Reading these books will improve their reading and social awareness to lay that foundation at an early age of how to respect themselves and others throughout life. This will allow them to be prepared to learn future academic skills in collaborative settings and become more well rounded citizens.
