The stories that children read shape the way that they see the world and their place within it.
Girls need to see themselves in their books. They need to see female characters on the page who are as brave, funny, independent and complex as they are. They need books with characters from their own cultural background, in which they can see themselves and their families celebrated. They need books about characters from different cultures to learn more about the world around them.
With an extensive, diverse classroom library, they can make sense of their own stories and develop empathy for others and for themselves.
