Currently we have a very small classroom in a school that was built in 1912. We have well loved desks that have to be at least fifty years old. The desks take up a lot of space and are difficult to arrange in a room that was not designed to maximize modern teaching styles. The tops are scratched and pitted making smooth writing difficult. The paint is chipped, they are wobbly, and impossible to keep clean.
Having tables designed for cooperative learning will help my students work more effectively as a community. These tables will give my students more room to move in the classroom to collaborate with their peers. This will help provide an environment that will not only enhance vocabulary development and acquisition of the English language for my ELL students but strengthen social/emotional learning in the classroom while affording my students a clean and stable area to work.
