The use of notebooks is a daily activity in my English classroom. Being able to write well is imperative to being successful in life. Within these notebooks, students will explore who they are as a reader and a writer. They will write about their hopes, dreams, goals, and fears. As we explore different styles of writing, students will be asked to write next to poems, novel excerpts, infographics, and engaging articles.
This is designed to engage students and incite responses, because writing next to something helps them form their own ideas. I will be taking a different approach to grading these notebooks, because progress is the end goal, and struggling writers often shut down when they receive low grades. According to Kelly Gallagher and Penny Kittle, "Pressure removes joy from learning. Pressure prevents experimentation." When students are given time everyday to write and given the freedom to choose what they write, they are less likely to feel trapped by failure.
