RL1.1 and RI1.1 ask students to ask and answer questions while reading. My students love learning and these books will help them ask and answer so many questions they already have! RL1.10 and RI1.10 expect students to read independently, and with supports, books of a variety of interests. RL1.5 asks students to identify the difference between fiction and nonfiction. I have chosen many books that are fiction as well as nonfiction for them to compare. RL1.2 asks first graders to retell stories including key details and demonstrate their understanding of the central message or lesson. My students can read many of these books independently because they are listed in the Accelerated Reader program as being kindergarten to first-grade level. They will meet the needs of my beginning readers.
