I will be purchasing a class set of ukuleles with the money raised for this project. Ukuleles are the perfect instrument for older students because they can apply the note-reading skills they have already learned, practice their rhythm skills, learn chords and chord changes, and play and sing at the same time.
Playing a musical instrument is a skill my students will be able to use throughout their lives. My hope is that some of my students will take the skills they learn in my music class and use them later in life--either on their own ukuleles, in band class in middle and high school, or even by transferring their knowledge to the guitar and play for their own enjoyment. Music stimulates the brain and brings people together.
The ukuleles purchased with this project will stay in my classroom, but I hope that learning how to play these beautiful instruments will inspire my students to continue playing and engaging with music for the rest of their lives.
